What is a Hunger Banquet?

Few experiences bring to life the inequalities in our world more powerfully than an Oxfam Hunger Banquet event. Unique and memorable, The Hunger Banquet event allows participants to experience firsthand how our decisions affect others in the world.

Upon arrival our guests draw tickets at random that assign them each to either a high-, middle-, or low-income tier-based on the latest statistics about the number of people living in poverty. Each income level receives a corresponding meal. The first 15 percent represent those living in the high- income tier and are served a sumptuous meal catered by celebrated chefs; the next 35 percent represent the largest demographic addressing hunger and food insecurity in our own community; our children. These guests will dine on an offering from the Kingston Consolidated school lunch menu; and the remaining guests, representing the 50% of the world population facing hunger and poverty daily, help themselves to small portions of rice and water. Although all guests pay the same price for admission, as in life we never know how fate is decided.

Our guest speaker:

Chef Tim is Executive Director of Food Services for the New Haven, CT Public Schools. One of Tim’s most valuable achievements to date has been introducing more local produce into the school lunch program (Over 150,000 pounds of CT Grown in 2010!) and working to educate New Haven’s urban students about fresh, healthy and great tasting food choices. NHPS has 46 schools with roughly 20,000 students with a free and reduced percentage of 80%.

Chef Tim has over 16 years of culinary experience having worked in school food service for the last 6 years and at several restaurants in the Northeast. Chef Tim has received local & national recognition for integrating lessons about food into school curriculum and for getting students to ask for locally grown, fresh foods; this effort led for him to receive the moniker, Local Food Dude, from a fellow Chef. Chef Tim worked closely with Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro and the ultimate passage of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Chef Tim then took it to the next level and worked directly the White House; specifically with the First Lady’s Office and Chef Sam Kass on the planning and roll out of the Chef’s Move to Schools Campaign. We are proud to introduce Tim to the Hudson Valley and to have him lead a discussion about child hunger with delegates from our regional schools.
