Alternative Spring Break is a week-long volunteer experience held in the New Paltz region each year during the college’s Spring Break. Student participants take part in a number of volunteer, social, and educational activities to build skills, strengthen their professional network, and give back to the community.

Alternative Spring Break 2012
“We are a diverse group of college students from SUNY New Paltz dedicated to giving to and learning from the local community,” reads the mission statement of Alternative Spring Break, as written by its 2012 participants. “We will provide our community with compassionate service and a positive image of college students during our spring break.”
The group consisted of 14 students, selected from a pool of applicants, who volunteered to work with five community organizations for a total of 700 hours. The students held a donation drive at Shoprite of New Paltz to collect donations for the Queen’s Galley Soup Kitchen in Kingston and Rondout Valley Animals for Adoption in Accord. In four hours, the students collected 443 items and $164.04. The group also volunteered at the Queen’s Galley, Mohonk Preserve, SUNY New Paltz Children’s Center, and Rondout Valley Animals for Adoption.
