The Ulster County Dispute Resolution Center is seeking new volunteers for its Court and Community mediation programs. The first step in becoming a community mediator is to attend our 32 hour training program: Principles of Basic Mediation
The next training will be held:
Monday-Friday, July 12th-16th
8:30am-5pm
Community Resource Center
280 Broadway
Newburgh, NY 12550
The training, conducted by DRC staff is a high energy, high quality synthesis of years of conflict resolution experience. The program includes conflict theory and styles, active listening techniques, the mediation process and the mediator’s role and ethics. Our approach to mediation is to empower people to resolve differences themselves, with the aid of a skilled mediator. Training material will be presented through lecture, demonstration and practice.
New volunteers also undergo an apprenticeship process that involves observation and co-mediation with experienced mediators. Community mediators provide service in the town and village courts throughout the county as well as through mediations scheduled in our office.
For individuals interested in becoming a new volunteer, there is a materials fee for the training of $150. Scholarships are available for students and seniors.
